FISHING OUT THERE
Sept 2008

Hi Folks.Sure hope your season has gone well so far-complete with big fish and smiles.

What I want to talk about in this column is fishing ‘out there’,you know, the ‘open water’thing. Some of you have been doing it since opening day, some are thinking its time to try it out there, and some I suspect have never tried it,or have, but without success and have no intention of seriously trying it again.Regardless of what category you’re in,I suspect all of you at times have concerns about  how random it seems when fishing out there. How much water there is,how little‘structure’there appears to be,in reality how futile it seems..Well,lets take a closer look at that and see if we can’t crank(no pun intended)your confidence level up a notch or two.

Confidence
June 2008

As I sit down to write this column its April and while trying to decide on a topic I get a call from a friend who says, "Dick there’s still 25 inches of ice on Lake Of The Woods, last year I was trolling for lakers there at this time, what’s going to happen on the opener?"

Coincidentally, last night another friend had e-mailed about a recent crappie ice fishing trip to Rainy Lake wondering about the effect of extremely low water on his opener there.

Then,as I thought about an e-mail I had recently received from another friend from Wisconsin asking me to comment on his ‘plan’for an upcoming trip to Lake Of The Woods it hit me,within days three friends with over 75 years of combined muskie fishing experience were expressing a lack of confidence in a season that hadn’t even begun.I thought wow, whats up with that?Upon reflection nothing much really. Everyone ,myself included, lacks confidence at times when fishing muskies. It goes with the territory.

Experimenting
April 2008
I write this just after returning from the Canadian opener. Only spent two days but had a great time and boated some very nice fish. One of the many things I enjoy about the opener is I get to test the many ‘experiments’ I’ve invested time and money in over the winter. Occasionally they work, most often they don’t.

Miscellanious musings on muskies and methods
Under such extreme conditions does one bait type seem to outshine others on a day to day basis? Yes, I believe so. The plain old spinnerbait.

Muskies - Creatures of Edges
In my opinion muskies, like whitetails, are creatures of edges. However, I wonder how many of us addicts think about edges and their importance to our success.

Fishing Spots Thoroughly
Hey, I like to run and gun like everyone else. If the fish are 'going,' it's hard to beat the wham-bam and move on approach. Likewise, if I'm scouting new water it makes sense to put on a bucktail, surface bait or some other search bait that lets me cover and learn the water quickly.

Spinnerbaits - Grinding & Rock Rolling
Ah, the good old Spinnerbait, one of the most fish catchingest baits ever designed. The ultimate "crescent wrench". A tool that works fast, slow, shallow, deep, and in almost any kind of structure you can encounter.

Reflections - A Brief Pause About Pausing
Pauses during lure retrieves have interested me since I was a kid. I can remember wading for largemouth bass, hurling an Arbogast Hula Popper as far as my Pflueger Supreme reel and metal or solid glass rod would allow, anxious to give the twitch that generated the loud pop, but really waiting for the pause, that magical sliver of time that usually provoked the strike.

Thinking About Stinking
Research shows fish, like deer, are very scent sensitive and can be attracted or repelled by incredibly small amounts of scent-amounts we humans can't come close to detecting.

Practicing Fishing
What? Fishing practice? Sounds absurd doesn't it? While your spouse or significant other may be suspicious, I submit it's not absurd at all. We practice hoops, golf, shooting-heck every sport we engage in except fishing.
